Pharmacists are increasingly recognized as integral members of the multidisciplinary care team for people experiencing mental health crises. Management of psychiatric conditions often requires specialized care, and finding an effective treatment may be a lengthy process. Pharmacists must be aware of guideline-recommended management strategies to facilitate timely interventions and lead patients through trials of different medications, dosages, or combinations, if required. PTCE’s 2025 Psychiatry Day of Education is designed to equip pharmacists with advanced knowledge and practical strategies for optimizing care in complex psychiatric conditions, focusing on schizophrenia, treatment-resistant depression (TRD), and tardive dyskinesia. While effective treatments for these conditions exist, a substantial proportion of patients experience inadequate response or nonadherence, and they often require more intensive and nuanced therapeutic approaches. Furthermore, the very medications used to manage schizophrenia and sometimes to augment treatment in TRD can increase the risk of developing tardive dyskinesia. Through expert-led sessions, participants will refine their ability to personalize therapeutic regimens, improve medication adherence, and elevate the standard of care for individuals living with these challenging and interconnected psychiatric disorders.
